The One Where Love is in the Air

Love is Like the Wind…

I met this amazing pair probably a year ago. Since that time they have started a life together and married. What a privilege it is to be a part of their journey! When they asked me to photograph them in celebration of their new marriage, I was flattered and delighted.

It’s wintertime here in the Pacific Northwest and the temperature is below freezing. With gray skies ahead for the foreseeable future, the options for my typical sun saturated photographs were slim. We opted for a downtown session to fill the skies with something other than the season’s whiteout. There is an alleyway in downtown Spokane in between a couple of restaurants near my favorite coffee shop Atticus Coffee and Gifts. It is lined with unique rod iron fencing. The ruddy colored brick walls of both buildings fall in arched patterns dimly lit by hanging lights. During the warmer weather, the alleyway serves as outdoor seating for two different restaurants and is a romantic spot tucked into the shadows. We headed down to the spot and began shooting. This pair made things so easy and we had an enjoyable albeit freezing time. The winter’s crisp wind was blowing punishing any tip of the body not bundled appropriately.

Side note: If you want the most unique gift options in the area this is the place. Atticus has many items that are handmade and local! I have spent many hours browsing, sipping good coffee and filling my cart with the most unique notebooks, coffee mugs, and the world’s best writing pencils. There is a whimsical hand carved mushroom grouping that my daughter and I just love and must find it’s way into my home.

I saw that you were perfect, and so I loved you. Then I saw that you were not perfect and I loved you even more.” – Angelita Lim

After attempting to warm cold fingers by snuggling them into their hands and pockets we headed toward Riverfront park. The carousel was whirling and the day was bright. We walked across the wooden planked bridge over the Spokane River. At the time, the Fall colors were still presenting and one tree in particular was visible from our bridge perch and I managed to work that brilliant yellow into the photographs. The sun decided to make a quick entrance and I worked diligently to snatch as many images of its brilliance as possible. There were many smiles, cuddles, and even some dancing during our time together.

Keep the Cuddlies

Romantic sessions with newlyweds or newly engaged couples are some of my favorite types of sessions. Couples are genuinely happy and comfortable with holding one another. After a few years, things tend to shift. Instead of naturally connecting romantically, couples stand side by side like statues. Why is it that when couples are first put together, they so easily cuddle and gaze into each other’s eyes? It seems that after a few years, married couples struggle with this type of behavior. While taking family sessions, I ALWAYS encourage couples to get a few pictures of just them, sans children. Most of the time, the couple resists. They started an adventure like these two, full of romantic love, hope, and kisses. I always ask the same questions, “How long has it been since you were photographed snuggling together?” The most common reply, “When we got married.” I think that a powerful reminder for any married couple is to think hard about the beginning of your marriage and treat your spouse the way you did then on a regular basis. Newlyweds wants to be close, be close. They wanted to hold eye contact and silently communicate, hold hands, and hug. They should do all the things they did then. Those romantic feeling can be awakened instead of wasted. When looking into some advice for lasting marriage getlasting.com says that, “Express appreciation every day” is an important component of a feeling satisfied in relationships.
